Who we are
Legal Kitty™ (legalkitty.com) is an educational show and blog about the law behind the headlines. In this policy, "Legal Kitty," "we" and "us" mean the team that runs it.
This policy covers legalkitty.com and the emails you get from us after you sign up. It doesn't cover TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or anywhere else you watch the show. Those platforms have their own privacy policies.
What we collect
What you give us
- Your email address, when you ask for a free guide or cheat sheet, or join the merch drop list.
- Your first name, if you choose to add it. It's optional.
- What you signed up for. Our forms can tag which guide, cheat sheet or list you asked for, so we send you the right thing.
- Anything you write to us when you email hello@legalkitty.com.
What reaches us automatically
When your browser loads a page, our host's servers receive basic technical details: your IP address, browser type, the page you asked for and the time. Our host, Vercel, uses these to deliver the site and keep it secure.
What we don't collect
We don't take payments on this site, so we don't see card details. We don't ask for government IDs or sensitive personal information. Please don't email us private details about a legal matter. Our Terms of Use explain why.
How we use it
- To send you the guide or cheat sheet you asked for.
- To send the Legal Kitty email: new episodes, guides, cheat sheets and the occasional merch news.
- To tell you when the merch drop opens, if you joined that list.
- To reply when you write to us.
- To keep the site running and secure, and to see, in totals, which pages people find useful.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We don't use your information to make automated decisions about you that have legal or similar effects.
Kit, our email provider
We use Kit (formerly ConvertKit) to run our email list. When you submit a form, your email address, your first name if you gave one, and the tag for what you requested go to Kit. Kit stores them on its servers in the United States and sends our emails for us.
Kit works as our service provider. Under its data processing terms, it can use your information only to provide its service to us. Kit's emails use standard open and click tracking, which shows us whether an email was opened or a link was clicked. We use that to learn what's helpful and to clear out addresses that never open anything.
Kit's own policy is at kit.com/privacy.
Who else sees it
We share personal information only with the providers that help us run Legal Kitty: Kit for email, Vercel for hosting, and the company that hosts our inbox for messages sent to hello@legalkitty.com. Each of them may use it only to provide services to us.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect our rights or someone's safety, or as part of a merger, sale or reorganization of the business. If that happens, the new owner has to keep the promises in this policy.
Cookies and analytics
Right now, legalkitty.com doesn't set advertising cookies. We don't use tracking pixels, Google Analytics or social media pixels.
If we turn on Vercel Web Analytics, it counts visits without cookies. It records the page, the site that sent you, your country, and your device type and browser. Visits are grouped using a code made from the request, and that code is discarded after 24 hours. It doesn't tell us who you are.
Some guide pages may save a small note in your browser's local storage so a guide you've already unlocked stays open next time. It stays on your device, and clearing your browser's site data removes it.
If any of this changes, for example if we add a new analytics or advertising tool, we'll update this page before it goes live.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address and first name for as long as you're subscribed.
If you unsubscribe, you stop getting our emails. Kit keeps a record that you unsubscribed so you aren't added back by mistake. If you'd like your information deleted entirely, email us and we'll remove it from Kit and from our own records within a reasonable period, normally within 30 days.
We keep emails you send us for as long as we need them to reply and keep sensible records, then delete them. We may keep a minimal note, such as your email address and the date, to show we honored an unsubscribe or deletion request, or where the law requires it.
How to unsubscribe
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it and you're off the list. No questions, no guilt trip.
You can also reply to any email or write to hello@legalkitty.com with "unsubscribe," and we'll do it for you. Unsubscribing stops the emails. If you want your record deleted too, just say so.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, and ask us to correct it or delete it. Email hello@legalkitty.com from the address you signed up with. We may need to confirm the request comes from you. We'll never treat you differently for asking.
California residents
California law (the CCPA, as amended by the CPRA) gives you these rights. We honor them for everyone in California, whether or not the law requires it of a business our size.
- Know. You can ask what personal information we've collected about you, where it came from, why we use it and who we've disclosed it to.
- Delete. You can ask us to delete it.
- Correct. You can ask us to fix anything that's wrong.
- Opt out of sale or sharing. We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We haven't done either in the past 12 months. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out request.
- Equal treatment. Using any of these rights won't change how we treat you.
In the past 12 months we've collected identifiers (your email address and first name), the tag showing what you asked for, email open and click information, and basic technical information from your browser. We got it from you and your device. We use it for the purposes listed in "How we use it," and we disclose it only to the service providers named above. We don't collect sensitive personal information.
You can make a request yourself, or through an authorized agent with your written permission. We'll reply within 45 days. We don't share personal information with others for their own direct marketing, which also covers California's "Shine the Light" law.
Visitors in the EU and UK
If you're in the European Union or the United Kingdom, the GDPR or UK GDPR applies. Legal Kitty is the controller of your information, and you can reach us at hello@legalkitty.com.
- Why we're allowed to use it. We send marketing email based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. We run and secure the site and answer your emails based on our legitimate interest in doing those things. We keep some records because the law requires it.
- Your rights. You can ask for access to your information, correction, deletion, restriction or a portable copy. You can object to our use of it, and you can withdraw consent at any time.
- Complaints. You can complain to your local data protection authority. In the UK, that's the Information Commissioner's Office. We'd appreciate the chance to fix things first, so please write to us.
- Transfers. Our providers store information in the United States. They protect transfers with recognized safeguards, such as the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension, or standard contractual clauses.
Children
Legal Kitty is made for adults. The site isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child under 13 has signed up, email us and we'll delete it.
Security
Every page is served over HTTPS, we use established providers to hold subscriber data, and only the people who run Legal Kitty can get into the list. No system is perfectly secure, though. If a breach ever affects your information, we'll tell you as the law requires.
Links to other sites
Our posts and guides link to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, news reports, court records and government sites. When you follow a link, that site's privacy practices apply, not ours.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of the page. If the change is significant, such as a new way of using your email address, we'll tell subscribers by email before it takes effect.
